Outside Stamford Bridge

David Luiz has reiterated his desire to stay at Chelsea, amid claims that there may be no agreement over a contract extension.

The Independent have claimed that Chelsea’s contract policy for players over 30 has made negotiations with Luiz difficult. The Brazilian is thought to be keen on the club making a bigger commitment.

Chelsea won’t budge, and rightly so. If the club wants this policy to ever be taken seriously by players’ agents then exceptions can’t be made, even if they are for influential members of the squad like Luiz.

What gives us hope that a deal will eventually be agreed is Luiz’s open desire to stay at Chelsea beyond the expiration of his current contract.

He has been quoted by the Guardian saying:

“I am just trying to enjoy myself, like I do every single day. Then, for sure, we will do the best thing for me, for Chelsea, for everybody. We are still talking, let’s see. Let’s see what the future brings. I love this club, everybody knows I want to stay.”

Luiz has been shaky at times this season, but he’s the kind of personality we need in the dressing room. He’s a winner, and teams chasing silverware are always better off having this kind of character within their ranks.
