Manchester United bound centre-back Victor Lindelof could just have easily been a Chelsea player, if the Daily Record are to be believed.

United announced on Saturday that they had reached an agreement with Benfica for the transfer of Lindelof, subject to the agreement of personal terms and completion of a medical.

However, the Daily Record report that Chelsea were interested in signing Lindelof last summer, and launched a lucrative attempt to try and secure his services. The Daily Record believe that Chelsea lodged a bid worth £39.5million, which was rejected by Benfica.

According to the Daily Record, Chelsea accepted defeat in their pursuit of Lindelof, and subsequently re-signed David Luiz from Paris Saint-Germain.

Lindelof may well turn out to be a shrewd acquisition by Jose Mourinho, but there can be no doubting that Luiz was one by Antonio Conte on deadline day – his stellar performances were influential in our success.
