Napoli star Dries Mertens has confirmed that his agent held talks with Chelsea before he committed his future to the Serie A giants, report Sky Sports.
Mertens was phenomenal for Napoli throughout the 2016/17 campaign. He was handed a more offensive role in Maurizio Sarri starting side, and his manager reaped the rewards for that decision.
The Belgium international bagged 28 goals and provided nine assists in Italy’s top tier last season, in what Squawka report to be 2560 minutes of action. That’s a direct goal contribution every 69 minutes, putting him on par with some of the best players in the world – and his excellent performances did not go unnoticed across Europe.
Mertens has confirmed to Sky Sports that his good form in a Napoli shirt caught the eye of the Premier League champions. The 30-year-old revealed to Sky Sports that despite interest from Chelsea, he never entertained the idea of leaving Naples this summer:
“Yes there was interest [from Chelsea], and from other clubs also, but in my head there was never an intention to change clubs.”
