Barcelona are struggling to tie French centre-back Samuel Umtiti down to a new deal that would sweep away his current release clause.

Umtiti has had a fantastic first season with the Catalan club, who lead the La Liga title race by 11 points having conceded just 13 league goals this season.

Despite being a well-polished machine at Barcelona, Don Balon reports Umtiti’s fresh contract talks are ‘stagnant’ with clubs needing to cough up €60m to lure the 24-year-old away from the Nou Camp.

Manchester United are showing a keen interest in Umtiti but Chelsea also want to solve current defensive dilemmas by signing the player, as Don Balon reports.

Gary Cahill and David Luiz, who were both influential in the Blues winning the Premier League last season, have dropped down Antonio Conte’s pecking order in this campaign.

Andreas Christensen has shown great progress in developing into a Chelsea regular but we may be looking for more depth in the back three this summer.

If the club wants to compete on all fronts for the future, we’re going to need to build on our squad after the turbulence surrounding the last two transfer windows.
