Frank Lampard has today confirmed that Ethan Ampadu will be going out on loan this season, after it was noticed that the youngster had not travelled to Japan with the rest of the team.
Speaking in his press conference over there this morning, Lampard admitted that the young Wales international was back in England finding a club where he could spend the season.
It’s a sensible move, given we have strength in depth in both of the youngsters’ main roles. But where should we send him to get the most out of this season of development?
As is so often with our young talented loanees, we face the choice of whether to let them go to a Championship team where they will likely play a lot more, but at a lower level; or to a team lower down the Premier League.
Aston Villa, who were promoted through the playoffs at the expense of Frank Lampard’s Derby last season, have been mentioned today in the Sun, and that could be a good compromise.
He will get games there – despite their massive spending he would be contending for minutes in midfield and in defence – but would still be at the top level. The other promoted teams make interesting options too, although they perhaps don’t have such progressive managers as Dean Smith.
The fact is that Ethan is too good for the Championship right now, and if we can find a Premier League team where he will play regularly, we can’t turn that option down.
