Chelsea are in real danger of going into the World Cup break in a pretty turmoil spot after an embarrassing defeat to Brighton at the weekend.
Things have been going OK so far for Graham Potter. I mean, he was unbeaten before getting thrashed by Brighton. There have been many positives and some good performances, but it also has still been looking very inconsistent, and unfortunately that concerns me going into the break.
The facts are right now, we haven’t won in the Premier League since four games ago when we beat Aston Villa 2-0. Things aren’t about to get any easier. In the league, we play against Arsenal and Newcastle before the World Cup break begins.
Right now, I have no belief at all that we can get anything more than a draw against either of these teams, who are both in excellent form. I actually think Arsenal might even tear us up and win.
Newcastle also capable of beating us, more than capable. My usual optimism has been sucked out of me after Saturday’s result and performance, it really has. I’m usually very optimistic.
In the League Cup we face Manchester City and could easily get knocked out of a competition that we would have had a real eye on for realistic silverware this season already. City, Arsenal, and Newcastle are all in fine form and could really send Chelsea into the World Cup break looking in a disastrous position.
We’re currently 6th in the league, but if we don’t get results in these two games, we could end up going into the World Cup struggling to even be in the top 10 if teams below us get results.
I have belief in Potter and the project and I am fully behind it. But if, and of course, it’s a big IF, we do end up going into the World Cup break after the aforementioned worst-case scenario, we will be in for a long month or so before we get to play again and try and put things right.
That is going to drag, that is going to be a horrible time. So Chelsea, I challenge you, let’s not ‘suffer’ during the World Cup, let’s sweat blood, sweat, and tears to get two massive results now in the league, please!
