Chelsea midfielder Enzo Fernandez is one of those who has consistently split opinions amongst the fan base.
For me it’s simple, it just depends where he plays. When he is playing deeper, he is certainly vulnerable on the defensive side. He is often by-passed too easily and lacks awareness of tracking the runners. But that’s not his game. His game is on the ball. He can control games and dictate the temp, and some argue that he is actually best at doing that in a deeper role. He has excellent vision for a pass, long or short – so he can operate anywhere on the pitch and have a real effect on the ball. He also has a top mentality and good leadership; he will leave it all out on the pitch and these kinds of players are priceless.
For me, Fernandez needs the defensive stability around him and behind him. So how Liam Rosenior is mostly setting up his midfield now, with two defensive minded midfield pivot players in Moises Caicedo and Andrey Santos, suits Fernandez because it takes that responsibility away from him to be able to just do what he does best, and that’s on the ball.
He is also superb at arriving into the box at the right time to get a shot in and more often than not, score an important goal. He’s already scored the most amount of goals (11) he’s had in one season, and we are only halfway through.
And now, Jamie Carragher has named him as being ‘right up there with the best in the Premier League’ and on current form, I don’t think many will argue with that.
