England and Germany provided us with some much-needed entertaining football to watch last night during a break in domestic football.
Like or loathe the international break, I think it’s safe to say that we all enjoyed watching the six-goal thriller at Wembley last night between two rival nations. What made this one even better though was because it was a Chelsea takeover.
Kai Havertz scored twice for Germany, Mason Mount scored for England, and Reece James grabbed an assist.
Graham Potter would have been smiling watching this one, and he would have also been looking closely at how Havertz played much better in the second half when he was asked to drop deeper mainly playing a ten role.
The German forward always looks so much better when he is playing deeper and is not having his back to goal and being asked to hold it up, which is what we have seen from him on too many occasions during his Chelsea career. He is much better when he is facing the goal, and scoring that beautiful goal against England last night was a perfect example of this.
Potter will see this and he will look to adapt to that I am sure of it. We have already seen Havertz operate a bit deeper in Potter’s first game as Chelsea boss against Salzburg. Havertz wasn’t great that game, but I do think it’s a sign of things to come in terms of his positioning and where he will be asked to play by Potter. I genuinely believe that he will get the best out of Kai Havertz and get him playing consistently better.
They can build something good here with Havertz in behind Pierre Emerick Aubameyang or Armando Broja for sure. He can play as a second striker and get into the pockets between the lines where he can be most dangerous.
