If Chelsea have a chance to bring former player back it could be smart – opinion

This one isn’t a transfer rumour of the day article because the source of this news is just not even worth speaking about.

But, upon hearing said news, the report of Chelsea being in talks with Antonio Rudiger over a sensational return to the club, it did intrigue me and had me wondering whether it would be a favourable move or not, despite the poor source of the info.

To start with, I’ve not heard anything on any Chelsea interest in bringing Rudiger back, at least at the time of writing this. That doesn’t mean that there isn’t any interest, just none that I’ve heard about yet.

I have two questions, one can be answered by you guys first, and the next one I’ll answer myself further below.

Would you back a move for Rudiger?

His contract runs out in 2026 at this moment in time, so when answering this question, let’s use the scenario that it will be him coming in as a free agent and on reasonable wages that the club would be content with. Answers in the comments please…

Would Chelsea even be interested in making such a move?

Yes, they would be, in a nutshell. But I’m not sure whether they would be interested in Rudiger in particular. But I know for a fact that they would sign a player of his age, IF the deal suits and is not a big financial hit, and if the player is the right player.

I asked someone VERY high up at the club directly whether they would do another ‘Thiago Silva type signing’ and they said they absolutely would, if it all made sense for the club. So they would make such a move.

I just don’t know if they would sign Rudiger in particular. It’s an intriguing prospect for sure, I’ll give my conclusion tomorrow. If they did sign him at the end of his contract in the summer of 2026, he would be 33.
