As I write this the news comes in regarding an alleged offer to buy Chelsea from Saudi Media, who would probably be one of the richer options of owners that we have been linked to at least.
However, there is probably still a need to come in and stabilise the club, whoever the new owners are and however rich they might be. None of us truly know what is around the corner, but here is a hypothetical look at some free agents that Chelsea might need to or want to look to bring in this summer to improve or bulk out the squad bearing in mind that they might also have to sell some players too.
The free agent market presents a good opportunity for Chelsea to move in and get some decent players without spending anything on transfer fees.
I realise that Chelsea have some very good players out on loan or in the academy who can and probably will come in to improve and bulk the squad. But for the purpose of this article, I am just looking at free agents.
The biggest opportunity for me would be Paul Pogba, who at the moment is still going to be a free transfer this summer. I believe he would be a great option to come in and improve our midfield.

In terms of goalkeepers to replace Kepa Arrizabalaga, who will more than likely be leaving, you have three reasonable options really in Sam Johnstone (WBA), Andre Onana (Ajax), and Fraser Forster (Southampton).
At the back there are a serious lack of options for reasonable left backs on a free transfer, but you do have Noussair Mazraoui from Ajax, a 24-year-old Moroccan international who would be worth looking at for right back to replace Cesar Azpilicueta, if he leaves.
Options for defensive midfielders as free agents this summer would include Marcelo Brozovic (Inter), Boubacar Kamara (Marseille), Florian Grillitsch (Hoffenheim), or Axel Witsel (Dortmund).who are all decent options.
And as well as Pogba, for centre midfield there is Franck Kessie (AC Milan), Corentin Tolisso (Bayern), Matias Vecino (Inter). Cesc Fabregas is also available on a free this summer…. I’m joking, sort of…
If we need more centre backs then there is the likes of James Tarkwowski (Burnley), Matthias Ginter (Monchengladbach), Alessio Romognoli (AC Milan), and Jason Denayer (Lyon) all available on a free.
Elsewhere in attacking positions if we need anything then there are options such as Andrea Belotti (Torino) , Paulo Dybala (Juventus), Ousmane Dembele (Barcelona), David Brooks (Bournemouth), Teemu Pukki (Norwich City – who would love a Tuchel press), and Dries Mertens (Napoli), all decent options available on a free as it stands.
I know some of these players aren’t the best we could be out there signing, but purely looking at it if we didn’t want to spend a single penny on signing players in terms of fees this summer to stabilise things, then we could still add strength to our squad and not lose too much.
