The Sun have been claiming that Brighton want Reece James on loan, but that move makes no sense.
We’re sure that half the teams in the Premier League are interested in signing the young defender, but they’re not going to get him.
With the transfer ban currently in place, Chelsea have lined themselves up perfectly in the right back slot. Davide Zappacosta featured little last year and wants to go. Fair enough. He can leave, and James can return from his stunningly successful loan in the Championship with Wigan to back up Cesar Azpilicueta.
That all makes perfect sense, that Brighton can forget loaning him. Why would we keep Zappacosta, against his will, letting his value decline, while James plays on loan in the top flight? He’s young enough to spend a year mainly on the bench, and he could easily pick up 5-10 starts in the cups, and that’s if Azpi doesn’t miss any games at all through injury or suspension.
So anyone interested in Reece can start looking elsewhere. Transfer ban or not, the club surely now see him as the ideal second choice right back going forward.
