It was only a friendly. It was only a semi pro team. It’s only the 10th of July. But with a new manager, every minute counts, and Michy Batshuayi got himself off to the best possible start under Frank Lampard when he opened the scoring for Chelsea against Bohemians tonight.
The Belgian has made his name as a poacher, and he showed exactly why when he grabbed onto Kenedy’s deflected shot and blasted home after just 8 minutes to give Chelsea the lead.
It’s a pretty even battle for the striking position at Chelsea right now. Olivier Giroud has experience, but is older and hasn’t been scoring enough. Tammy Abraham is young and hungry and hasn’t yet had a chance. Michy is proven at a higher level than Tammy, but hasn’t grabbed the chances he’s had with us so far.
Overall it’s a level playing field, and even minor goals like this will all play into Frank Lampard’s thinking this season. There’s no denying that Michy has presented a good case for more chances today.
