Opinion: My advice to all football fans is to emotionally detach from transfer rumours

Ah, the transfer season, what a delightful time of the year, especially for football fans who are scrambling around trying to find out everything that is going on surrounding every little story that comes out.

I get it, I LOVE this time of the year myself; I find it thrilling, dramatic, and it really fuels the adrenaline juices. Your club looking to sign the next big talent in world football, or selling that player who you just do not rate and want gone.

It’s all a game of emotions, ups, downs, and rollercoasters. That is why it is called silly season. You will hear silly stories, contrasting stories, last minute changes, hijackings of deals, and many other dramatic twists and turns.

I’ve been covering transfer windows for the last 13 years, and if I was to offer one bit of advice to any football fan out there right now, that is don’t let yourself get emotionally attached to every single player you are linked with, or every single story that you hear that excites you.

Because even if a fee is agreed for said player, terms are agreed and everything is done, you are still never over the line with that deal until your club or their club has officially announced it, this is what you should always remember.

For me personally, I emotionally detach myself from every single rumour I am reporting on that involves the club I support, Chelsea. Because I have been there and see it all, and I’ve learned to never celebrate a deal, or throw cocky slurs at rival fans for missing out, until that deal is officially done.

This also manages to keep me entirely sane, anger-free, and very level-headed during silly season. I see people become far too involved in it and I think that it cannot be good for mental health. I just try and enjoy it, the highs and the lows. I don’t ever expect anything and that way, I am permanently saved from disappointment!

Obviously, I am not telling you what to do here, just a little bit of advice. You do you!

Never a truer word I learnt to ignore transfer rumours we never get what they say in the papers and then end up with players like Lukaku
