One of the most exciting Chelsea players on the preaseason tour of Ireland is Billy Gilmour.
The little Scot has been flourishing in the youth system, and while he’s still a lesser known name than the likes of Callum Hudson-Odoi, he’s beginning to get the people who follow the Blues’ youth teams increasingly excited.
He’s a technical, attacking midfielder, who models his game on Cesc Fabregas. He’s still a long way off getting into the first team squad, but if he does well over the next few weeks he can leave a real impression in Frank Lampard’s mind. Jody Morris and Joe Edwards will already be well aware of his talents.
Seeing him in the rondos in the training sessions in the last couple of days has been really encouraging. We’re sure he’s showing off his lovely touch and awareness.
He will probably play another season at youth level, then maybe go out on loan next season. After that who knows – if he continues developing as quickly as he is now, he might well have a chance at the first team at that point.
In the meantime, some good performances on this tour in training – and maybe even getting on the pitch – will be a huge boost for his career prospects. Fans are starting to recognise just how could he could be – now it’s Frank’s turn to find out.
