Pedro has been speaking ahead of the game against Liverpool in the UEFA Super Cup tonight, and the experienced attacker is full of praise for the opposition’s defensive star Virgil Van Dijk.
The Dutchman has been massively influential since arriving from Southampton, and with him at its heart the Reds defence looks nigh on impenetrable. Pedro compared him to his old international colleague Sergio Ramos:
“They are very good central defenders, probably at this time at the top,” he said in quotes carried on Goal.com.
“Sergio Ramos is very good. I know him very well: great defender, great with the ball.
“Van Dijk is also the same: so strong, very good in the air, scores goals. Two big players,” he concluded.
He’s not wrong, the centre-back’s all round game is just superb, with the ability to win balls in the air and on the ground, as well as play out from the back.
So the question is, how to trouble him? Pedro owes Chelsea fans a couple of favours after some wild and wayward shots at the weekend, and one infuriating decision to not play in his teammate which may have cost us some vital points.
He’s the kind of player who will pop up in these big games however, and assuming Frank Lampard gives him the nod to play in Istanbul, this is the exact type of match the former Barcelona man can pop up and change the game.
It won’t be easy against a titan like Virgil, but if anyone has the nous to sneak into space behind him, it’s Pedro.
