It’s been a long road back for Ross Barkley.
The midfielder arrived at Chelsea last January after a long injury layoff, sat on the bench for 6 months, and then had to adapt to a radical new style of football under Maurizio Sarri.
It’s been a mixed season to be honest, but he’s had some really nice games mixed in there. In a more consistent team, he might have done better.
For England last night, admittedly against inferior opposition, he started on the bench but was on the pitch sooner than expected as Eric Dier went off injured.
Barkley’s performance really impressed, and he may have put himself in line to play in the next game on Monday.
He looked dynamic and creative in Gareth Southgate’s system, showing that he still has the potential to be a game-changing player if used in the right way. The way Sarri deploys him just doesn’t get the best out of him.
You can add him to the list of our stars suffering under Sarri-ball then. But at least we get to see these glimpses to remind us that the ability is still there.
