There has never been a better time for Chelsea to cash-in on left-back Marcos Alonso – and it looks as though we may be given an opportunity to do so.
AS report that Atletico Madrid are keen on signing the Spain international. Filipe Luis is set to walk out the door (again) and Alonso has reportedly been earmarked as his successor.
Why it’s time to get rid
Only a fool would deny the influence that Alonso has had at Chelsea. It was his ability to play left-wing-back that prompted Antonio Conte’s change to a 3-4-3 system.
We all know how that ended.
Though he had an important role in our 2016/17 Premier League title triumph, Alonso has struggled to perform to such a high standard over the past 12 months.
He has subsequently been in and out of the side, with Emerson Palmieri proving himself to be a far more accomplished option in the full-back role.
Despite that, Alonso’s stock remains high. That’s proven by interest from Atletico, a side who pushed Barcelona for La Liga title this season.
He’s at the peak of his powers at 28-years-old, but is still not up to standard in the defensive phase. It’s safe to say that he’s not going to learn how to defend at this age.
The Premier League is unforgiving and Alonso’s weaknesses have been exploited, but that’s not to suggest that he couldn’t thrive in his native Spain.
He deserves the opportunity to do so, rather than be a rotation option at Stamford Bridge and be vilified by Chelsea supporters on social media.
If Chelsea were to be offered a considerable sum in exchange for Alonso, which you have to think we would, now is the time to take the cash and say goodbye.
It’d be in the best interests of all parties involved.
