Sky Sports have this morning reported that Danny Drinkwater, along with Michy Batshuayi, will get the chance to change their fortunes at Chelsea this summer.
While that may be the case for Michy, who plays in a position which is very much up for grabs; Drinkwater is in a much longer queue.
The £35m signing from the fateful summer of 2017 has played only 500 minutes in the two full seasons he’s been here, and that won’t change now. Yes we have a transfer ban, but we’ve also brought back Tiemoue Bakayoko and Mason Mount, and permanently signed Mateo Kovacic, to join our already decent stock of central midfielders.
If Drinkwater is to get a chance, it will almost certainly have to come at the expense of Mason Mount. And given the connection our new manager has with him, and the potential Mason has shown as an academy product, it would be quite the wild world in which DD gets the nod ahead of MM to be part of Frank’s plans this season.
Of course, like last year he will get some minutes at this stage of the preseason, but once the real action gets under way, expect to see him off on loan; or maybe more likely, in the stands once again.
