Chelsea took on Reading earlier this week, and most people were expecting to see manager Frank Lampard unleash what is likely to be his first team against the Royals.
Instead, it was a second string for the first half, followed by a more solid XI for the second.
Speaking to Chelsea TV after the game in the clip you can see below, Lampard said he was “getting closer” to deciding his team – but time is running out.

There’s just under two weeks until Chelsea’s first game of the season against Manchester United, and just two friendlies left until then. The first team players – whoever they are – are going to need to play more than 45 minutes against RB Salzburg tomorrow, that’s for sure; and hopefully 70+ against Borussia Monchengladbach next week.
So finally, after a lot of speculation about where his head is at with regards to formations and the players competing for spots in the XI, we will finally know from the team that starts tomorrow who is likely to be in his provisional lineup for the big kick off.
Of course there’s always room for him to change his mind – some positions see players like Ross Barkley and Mason Mount neck and neck for what is probably going to be just one place in the team. But either of them can change his mind with a good showing in one of these final friendly games.
There are 180 minutes left for these guys to impress. Let’s see what they’ve got.
