WhoScored were today linking Zenit St Petersburg with potentially making a move for Mateo Kovacic.

That would mean them signing him permanently from Real Madrid once his loan at Chelsea ends.

It’s an interesting prospect, given he’s divided opinions at Chelsea. Maurizio Sarri clearly likes him as a tidy, technical player, and he’s even used him to fill in for Jorginho at times. But some fans bemoan the fact that he has no goals and just two assists, despite playing a huge number of games.

He has a lovely touch and a burst between the lines that should make him dangerous, but all too often he plays the passive short passes that this team has been guilty of all season.

The team has succeeded a lot more with Ruben Loftus-Cheek’s dynamism instead, and even Sarri has seen the light on that recently. That just might make Kovacic’s future uncertain, despite the number of games he’s played.
