Athletic: Chelsea could increase £120m Enzo asking price after verbal agreement expires

Chelsea are bracing themselves for bids for Enzo Fernandez, but it will take a lot to make them sell him now.

Chelsea have filled up their squad nicely this summer, and they look set to spend the rest of this window selling rather than buying. That would change if Enzo Fernandez were to leave, though. So what’s the situation with him? The Athletic’s Deal Sheet has some interesting information on his situation.

Chelsea shut door on Enzo departure

They claim that the £120m price tag that Chelsea had on the Argentine was part of a “verbal agreement” that they had with him. Effectively, it seems they told him back in the spring that they wouldn’t stand in his way in an offer that big came in. The deadline for that deal has now “expired.” So if Enzo has to stay, he can’t have many complaints.

It’s also noted that the massive fees for Elliot Anderson and Sandro Tonali means that Chelsea might actually ask more than £120m for Enzo. They are “reluctant to help improve a Premier League rival”, when it will be so difficult to get a replacement themselves.

In other news…

One player who will be sticking around is Emmanuel Emegha – the decision has been made that he will be part of the first team squad this season.

As well as big transfer news, this week also saw big ownership news, with an exclusive from the FT claiming that Todd Boehly and Mark Walter are looking at selling their stakes in Chelsea.

Pedro Neto’s asking price has been set at £100m by Chelsea – a pretty mad number, but one in line with other deals this summer.
