AS Roma sporting director Monchi has done little to play down reports that Emerson Palmieri and Edin Dzeko could be on their way to Chelsea this month.
As reported by the Metro, the Premier League champions are hoping to sign the AS Roma duo in final week or so that remains of the transfer window. The report claims that the double-deal could be worth as much as £44M.
Palmieri would be able to provide Marcos Alonso with some genuine competition, which he doesn’t currently have, and would path the way for both Kenedy and Baba Rahman to seek regular first-team football out on loan elsewhere.
Dzeko, on the other hand, could help solve Chelsea’s goal-scoring problems. We fired four past Brighton at the weekend, but Michy Batshuayi failed to get on the scoresheet. After Alvaro Morata’s struggles in recent weeks, Dzeko could prove to be a shrewd acquisition.
Chelsea fans ought to be optimistic that the deals will be done, too. Monchi is quoted by the Metro refusing to rule out the sale of high-profile players this month. He does insist, though, that AS Roma will not be weakened:
“Whatever happens will be done thinking about what’s best for the club and the team. In my mind is always the desire to strengthen the squad, which is my job.”
“My work is 365 days a year. We are always ready to seek and find players for the present and the future. It’s not just one or two days looking for players.”
