Chelsea are interested in signing Barcelona centre-back Samuel Umtiti, according to Don Balon (via the Express).
The Blues’ sturdy back-line was the foundation of their success in the 2016/17 campaign. Cesar Azpilicueta, having already proven his defensive credentials at both right-back and left-back, took to life as a right-centre-back like a fish to water.
David Luiz, who was previously renown for being unreliable and erratic, showcased his new-found maturity, and subsequently earned his place in the PFA team of the year. Gary Cahill, who wore the armband during John Terry’s absence from the side, also enjoyed a stellar campaign.
However, it has been a different story this time around. In the past two games, Chelsea have conceded seven goals – and that was against AFC Bournemouth and Watford.
Our defence needs a major makeover, and it looks as though we have already identified one man who could step in to tighten things up at the back.
As per Don Balon, Chelsea are keen on signing Barcelona defender Samuel Umtiti. The Frenchman has been a revelation during his time at the Camp Nou, and his good performances appear to have captured the imagination of the Chelsea scouts.
The report claims that Umtiti’s buy-out clause stands at £53M, with Chelsea prepared to triple his current salary from £2.66m to £7.98M. Assuming we would hand Umtiti a five-year contract, that’s around £40M across the course of the contract.
£93M may seem a lot to fork out on a defender, but Umtiti looks destined to retire as one of the best of his generation. He is worth the money, and we should look to get this one done as soon as possible.
