Chelsea were thought to be leading the race to sign midfielder Nicolo Barella from Cagliari, but it looks as though the Italian will now be signing for Serie A giants Inter Milan.
When it became clear that Cesc Fabregas would not be ending the month a Chelsea player, speculation began over who we would be signing as a replacement. Two players have been most closely linked with a move to Stamford Bridge – Leandro Paredes and Nicolo Barella.
As we reported yesterday, PSG have now stolen a march on Chelsea in the race to sign Paredes. If they are able to haggle Zenit down a few million euros on their asking price, it appears likely that he will be moving to the Parc des Princes this month, leaving Chelsea out in the cold.
Unfortunately for Maurizio Sarri, we are also poised to miss out on Barella. According to Calciomercato, Inter Milan are closing in on agreeing a fee with Cagliari to sign him. It’s thought that Inter would pay an initial €40M with a further €10M in bonuses.
That’s a lot of cash. Not only for a player untested in the Premier League, but also for someone who would essentially be a backup for Jorginho. It’s not practical to spend such an amount of money on a player who’s going to be sat on the bench.
