Chelsea had a disappointing 2017-18 season. Their Premier League title defence never went underway and the season finished by missing out on UEFA Champions League qualification for the next season as they finished fifth in the table.
Much of their problems on field had to do with their problems off the field. Manager Antonio Conte questioned the board and management on several occasions as the club missed out on key transfer targets.
Hence, it is imperative that Chelsea have a good transfer window this time.
Chelsea manager Antonio Conte had been in sports news for a large part of the last season. It was widely reported that Conte would get the sack last season but he has still somehow managed to remain at the helm of affairs.
However, Chelsea have been linked to Napoli manager Maurizio Sarri for much of the current transfer window. Various sources reported that Sarri along with assistant and former Chelsea legend Gianfranco Zola would form the new coaching staff. Despite much hype and rumours, nothing is settled on this front.
Current Chelsea number one goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois refused a new contract just before the 2018 FIFA World Cup went underway. Courtois has long been the subject of conjecture as he remains one of the targets bound for Real Madrid. With backup goalkeeper Willy Caballero having a disastrous World Cup, Chelsea needs to find their new number one goalkeeper soon.
According to the transfer rumors, Chelsea is widely rumoured to go after Brazilian goalkeeper Alisson. Alisson impressed one and all with his performances last season as he took AS Roma to the semi-finals of the Champions League. He kept 17 clean sheets in the Serie A last term.
Chelsea are keen to sign impressive Russian attacking midfielder Aleksandr Golovin. Golovin has been one of the architects of the Russian side which are on a fairy tale run in the World Cup. Golovin have also found suitors in Juventus but any offer must match his current club CSKA Moscow’s valuation of €25 million.
Chelsea also must retain the services of star players Eden Hazard and Willian. Hazard has been a target of Real Madrid for a long time and has said that he wants clarity on the Antonio Conte situation before committing to any new deals at Chelsea.
Willian has been a reported Manchester United target this season. Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho wants to sign the player he signed during his Chelsea days.
