There is no option to buy in the deal to sign Mateo Kovacic on a season-long loan from Real Madrid, according to reports in Spain.
Multiple Spanish sources, notably Alberto Piñero, claim that Chelsea have failed to negotiate a clause into the deal which would allow us to purchase the Croatia international next summer.
Instead, Kovacic will spend a year at Stamford Bridge before returning to Real Madrid and competing with Luka Modric and Toni Kroos for game-time in the middle of the park.
This comes after reports in England and Italy that there was an option to buy in the deal. We’re left wondering what we should believe.
We struggle to see what’s in it for us if we are only developing Real Madrid’s player for them, rather than for ourselves. It could also come at the expense of Ross Barkley or Ruben Loftus-Cheek.
Some clarity would be appreciated. Perhaps Chelsea will provide it upon Kovacic’s arrival at the Cobham training ground.
