The situation surrounding David Luiz could be set to escalate as we approach the January transfer window.

When Chelsea decided to re-sign Luiz on deadline day in the summer of 2016, eyebrows were raised, and understandably so. The Brazilian had always had somewhat of a reputation for being a liability, and all signs pointed to Luiz beginning to decline during his time at PSG.

Willian and David Luiz
David Luiz played a starring role in Chelsea’s Premier League title triumph last season.

However, Antonio Conte found the perfect position for him as the middle of a back-three. Luiz was comfortably one of the best defenders in the Premier League in the 2016/17 campaign, and won his first league title as a Blue as a result.

However, things haven’t been so straightforward for him this term. Luiz has now lost his starting spot to Andreas Christensen, who has scarcely put a foot wrong since coming into the side.

Christensen against Spurs
Andreas Christensen’s stellar performances for Chelsea this term have ousted David Luiz.

The Daily Star claim that he is now ‘desperate’ to force his way back into Conte’s thinking. The report claims that Luiz is prepared to seek the exit door should he be unable to do so.

Most worryingly from a Chelsea fan’s perspective is that the Daily Star claim that, along with Bayern Munich, Manchester United have one eye on the developing situation in SW6.

The prospect of Luiz lining up in a United shirt is something that none of us want to entertain, especially after Juan Mata, Nemanja Matic and Romelu Lukaku…

I’d be sorry to see him go. I think Chelsea need to get out of the “first team” mentality and progress to a “first team squad” mentality. If we don’t, how can we properly rotate players ?
