Manchester United are renewing their efforts to sign Chelsea midfielder Nemanja Matic, having accepted defeat in their pursuit of Tottenham’s Eric Dier, according to the Independent.
The Independent believe that Matic is a long-term target of former Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho, who knows the Serb well having previously worked with him during his time at Stamford Bridge.
As per the Independent, Man United were not optimistic that they could convince Chelsea to sell them Matic in wake of the Romelu Lukaku saga, but their hopes of landing the 28-year-old have increased in recent weeks.
The Independent claim that Matic is keen on moving to Old Trafford this summer and reuniting with Mourinho. The only potential stumbling block is Chelsea’s asking price, which is believed to stand at £40M.
In the current market, that’s a small price to pay to prise a two-time Premier League winner away from a direct competitive rival. From a Chelsea perspective, we would hope that Antonio Conte would be allowed to reinvest that money into his squad.
