Thibaut Courtois’ stellar World Cup campaign could be set to cost Chelsea a great deal of cash.
Courtois was in inspired form for Belgium throughout, particularly against France in the semi-final – he kept them in the game.
It’s the sort of heroics that we’ve only seen sporadically from the Belgian in a Chelsea shirt, despite him having two Premier League winners’ medals to his name.
Courtois walking out the door would not be as much of a disaster as many seem to believe, assuming he is replaced by a goalkeeper of same or similar quality.
He hasn’t ruled out staying, though. He could still sign a new contract, but would likely demand more money following his performances in Russia.
He hinted at that himself. After the third-place playoff, Courtois was quoted by the Belgian media saying:
“Obviously with this World Cup, I think what was on the table obviously is different than what I can have, maybe.”
“In this World Cup I have ignored all the speculation, all the rumours. But now, in the next few days, I will have a chat with my agent and see what Chelsea told him, and then we will talk.”
To us, this looks like suggestion he feels his stock has risen and he’s worth more than Chelsea previously thought.
We’ll have to wait and see if the club are prepared to bow to his demands.
