Chelsea academy player of the year Conor Gallagher has signed for Charlton Athletic on a season long loan deal, the club announced on Friday morning.

Gallagher fought off stern competition from his academy counterparts in order to scoop the award at the end of season awards and has subsequently been given the opportunity to compete in the professional game with Charlton.

Chelsea’s previous academy player of the year, Reece James, took to life in the Championship like a fish to water when he joined Wigan Athletic last summer. We’ll all be hoping that Gallagher can do the same.

Gallagher, who was involved in Chelsea’s pre-season fixtures in Ireland at the start of Frank Lampard’s reign, has been handed the number 11 shirt by Charlton, which could be testament to their intentions to use him.

If he is given a string of games at the Valley, we have no doubts that this will prove to be a successful loan spell for the youngster. Beyond that, opportunities are waiting under Lampard’s stewardship.

There ought to be no need for further motivation than that…
