Monaco take on Lyon in a tasty curtain raiser in Ligue 1 tonight, and there will be a couple of ex-Chelsea men on display.
Cesc Fabregas, of course, joined Monaco last January from Chelsea, and he will play in their midfield. In the back line, it’s also been reported than Jonathan Panzo may make a start for the team from the principality.
Panzo came through the Chelsea youth system, before leaving us last summer to join Monaco for more first team chances. If indeed he does get the nod against Lyon, at just 18 he can consider his path to the first team has been very easy.
If he was at Chelsea, he might have just had one season on loan somewhere, although with the return of Frank Lampard and his former youth coaches Jody Morris and Joe Edwards to senior positions to Chelsea he might feel he made the jump just a year too early – although he wasn’t to know what was about to happen in a rollercoaster 12 months.
Let’s hope he can continue his impressive rise in France with a good showing tonight, and that the club can persuade him to come back and be a home grown star for us in the future.
That could be one of the great long term benefits of having this coaching staff in place.
