David Luiz has admitted that he could have left Chelsea if Antonio Conte remained as manager.
Luiz enjoyed a prosperous first season under Conte after returning to Stamford Bridge in the summer of 2016. Slotting into the middle of the Italian’s back-three provided him with a new lease of life.
The 2017/18 campaign was less straightforward. Luiz suffered with several injuries, as well as a supposed falling out with Conte. He subsequently missed virtually the entirety of last season.
Luiz is back in the side now and enjoying his football. It could have been very different, however. The Brazilian has admitted that, had Conte stayed at Chelsea, he may have been forced to seek the exit door.
He’s quoted by Sky Sports saying:
“If the manager had stayed the same, of course, everybody knows maybe I had to move clubs. Now I am here and so happy.”
Despite his recent struggles, it’s good news that Luiz remained. He’s only going to improve as his understanding of Maurizio Sarri’s system develops. We choose to keep the faith in him.
