Chelsea centre-back David Luiz has earned himself a new contract with his performances under Maurizio Sarri so far this campaign, according to the Standard Sport.
Luiz was left out in the cold under Antonio Conte last term. His battle with form and fitness proved too tough to overcome and he subsequently lost a season of his career.
Sarri’s appointment was a blessing for the Brazilian. Sarri turned Kalidou Koulibaly into one of the best centre-backs on the planet during his time as Napoli manager, placing great value on his ability with the ball at his feet.
He’s well on his way to doing the same with Luiz, who has started every Premier League game so far this season. His imperious display against Liverpool epitomised his improvement this term.
According to Standard Sport, Chelsea are now planning on rewarding Luiz with a new contract. His age will only allow for a one-year extension, with club policy preventing any longer, but the report claims that there’s ‘optimism’ he will accept the terms.
Luis has been a key figure at Chelsea since the turn of the decade. Re-signing him has proven to be a worthwhile piece of business, and he clearly still has plenty to offer. We hope that this new contract is signed and sealed as soon as possible.
