Chelsea have reportedly identified their number one target to replace manager Maurizio Sarri, should he be sacked in the next week.
Sarri is up against it at Stamford Bridge, despite the Blues’ progression into the last 16 of the Europa League. A 3-0 win over Malmo does not undo how shocking we have been over the past couple of months, as Marina Granovskaia will be well aware of.
Roman Abramovich and the rest of the Chelsea board are notoriously unforgiving. Sarri’s next two fixtures are the Carabo Cup final against Manchester City and a Premier League tussle with Tottenham. These could genuinely be Sarri’s final days in charge.
The question on the mind of every Chelsea fan is this – who will come in to replace Sarri in the event that Abramovich would swing the axe? Well, the Telegraph‘s Matt Law, who knows his stuff when it comes to Chelsea, believes he knows the answer.
Former club assistant Steve Holland is the leading candidate to take over on a temporary basis. Chelsea believe that the FA owe them after we allowed him to work for England while still on our payroll. It’s unclear if they hold the same belief.
Holland knows this crop of players better than anyone else, which would be a huge bonus for both him and the squad if he was to arrive. We are reluctant to give up on Sarri, but admit that it’s now looking like he’ll go. If Holland returns, we’ll back him all the way.
