Terrific triumph marred as midfielder limps off field of play with thigh injury

Chelsea midfielder Mateo Kovacic limped off during our 2-0 win over Manchester City with what appeared to be a thigh injury.

Kovacic has been used frequently by Maurizio Sarri this season. Regardless of whether you believe he deserves to start ahead of Ross Barkley and Ruben Loftus-Cheek, you have to acknowledge the trust that Sarri has in him.

Sarri demonstrated that trust once again on Saturday afternoon by naming Kovacic in his starting eleven against league leaders Manchester City, despite the fact that Loftus-Cheek has been in excellent form in recent weeks.

Unfortunately for Kovacic, he was unable to make it through the game unscathed. Midway through the second half it became clear that he would have to be withdrawn, with the Croat laying down and clutching his thigh.

The severity of his injury is unclear, but we dearly hope that it’s nothing season, with the busy festive period now within touching distance.
