- Ruben Loftus-Cheek ruled out of Liverpool EFL Cup clash.
- Loftus-Cheek has been sidelined since the international break.
- OPINION: Loftus-Cheek needs to leave Chelsea in January
Ruben Loftus-Cheek will not be available for selection as Chelsea visit Anfield to take on Liverpool in the EFL Cup on Wednesday night, according to the Telegraph.
Loftus-Cheek is yet to show Maurizio Sarri what he’s capable of, and as a result started the season on the sidelines. The Englishman went away on international duty and returned injured, which has ruled him out of Chelsea’s past three fixtures.
Our EFL Cup tie with Liverpool looked set to provide Loftus-Cheek with an opportunity to impress. Ross Barkley started as the most advanced midfielder against PAOK, so it would be fair to assume Loftus-Cheek would get his opportunity this time.
However, the Telegraph report that Loftus-Cheek will not be fit to feature for Chelsea for another week or so, ruling him out of Wednesday night’s game.
This is not only a blow for Loftus-Cheek on a personal level, but also for Chelsea, who could do with rotating the side and resting several key players after recent fixture congestion.
The probability of Loftus-Cheek establishing himself as a regular in Sarri’s starting eleven is diminishing with every week that passes. He appears to be behind Barkley and Mateo Kovacic in the pecking order.
He needs to get match-fit and be given minutes on the pitch as soon as possible. The last thing we want to do is starve the 22-year-old of game-time while he is in an important period of his development.
