Gonzalo Higuain, who’s poised to make his Chelsea debut this evening, has revealed the reasons why he almost quit football back in 2016.
Gonzalo Higuain is one of the greatest strikers of his generation and it’s a real honour to have him here at Stamford Bridge. His diamond-encrusted career has been defined by great triumph and bagfuls of goals. We’ll be hoping for more of the same over the next five-months.
Though Higuain’s career has been one that every budding footballer would love to have, but it hasn’t all been sunshine and rainbows for the Argentine. During an interview with the Mirror, Higuain explained how he almost stopped playing football in 2016 to look after his mother.
“I decided immediately that I must stop playing football so that I could look after my mum,” recalled Higuain, whose mother has now made a full recovery. “I suspected something was wrong at home during the Copa America, but it was still a huge shock when I was told the truth.”
“I felt guilty, because I played in that final without knowing. My whole world came crashing down in that moment. I was not interested in anything else but my mum. I told her I was finished with football and if it had been down to me I would have stopped playing.”
“Her reply was that when I played football it made her happy. She told me that she would not allow me to give up something I loved. She asked me to carry on for her — and I knew I had to grant that wish.”
Higuain is a great striker, but perhaps more importantly, an incredibly strong-willed man. That’s the real reason that he’s achieved as much as he has, and we dearly hope that it will help us on our journey to further success at Chelsea. His time as a Blue begins this evening – and we can’t bloody wait!
