Chelsea’s chances of winning the Champions League have been revealed in the shape of statistics provided by FiveThirtyEight.

The Premier League champions showed both the quality and the tactical discipline it takes to be triumphant in the world’s biggest club competition on Wednesday night as they defeated Atletico Madrid after from home.

Following the triumph over Atletico, FiveThirtyEight believe we now have a 91% chance of progressing to the round of sixteen. However, from there it starts to look considerably more difficult, we know full well how hard it is to be successful in Europe.

FiveThirtyEight claim that Chelsea have a 49% chance of reaching the quarter-finals, and just a 22% chance of progressing from there to the semi-finals.

FiveThiryEight’s report gives Chelsea virtually no chance of winning the Champions League in it’s entirety. They give us a 9% chance of reaching the final, and a 4% chance of lifting the trophy.

We have defied the odds previously in this competition, we see no reason why we can’t replicate that success. Football is won and lost on spreadsheets.
