David Luiz has raced to the defence of Chelsea midfielder Jorginho, following increased scrutiny over the Italian’s lack of contribution in the attacking third.
David Luiz is a player who has had his fair share of stories published about him during his time as a Chelsea player. The media have never pulled punches when it comes to their assessments of Luiz, yet here he is, a Premier League and Champions League winner.
Jorginho would be lucky to experience that in a Chelsea shirt, and we certainly hope he does, but there have been some recent suggestions that he isn’t on the path to greatness at Stamford Bridge. Many are not impressed with what they’ve seen from him so far.
David Luiz, who has watched Jorginho closely the whole season, has taken aim at his doubters. Speaking to the media, Luiz revealed his belief that criticism of Jorginho is misplaced, even if he is yet to provide an assist in the Premier League this term.
He’s quoted by Standard Sport saying:
“I don’t think it is fair to talk about the number of assists he has made without comparing him to players who play in the same deep position.”
“It all depends on the philosophy and how you play. I think the way he is playing provides energy for us, moving the ball and making the team keep moving.”
Of course Jorginho needs to do more, but it seems like many have completely forgotten that he’s in his debut season as a Chelsea player. He needs time, like any other player, and he’ll get it under Maurizio Sarri. Jorginho’s only going to get better and better.
