Is Rio Ferdinand a closet Chelsea fan? We’ve always had our suspicions…

The Manchester United legend has revealed that he believes Chelsea are England’s biggest hope in the Champions League this season, report the Daily Star.

The Premier League champions brushed aside Qarabag on Tuesday night, defeating the Azerbaijani minnows 6-0. Although it is unclear what conclusions can be drawn from beating such weak opposition, it certainly bodes well for our chances going forward.

The main difficulty we face is the task of overcoming Atletico Madrid and AS Roma and progressing to the knock-out rounds of the competition. Ferdinand, however, does not appear to think that it will be particularly strenuous for his former foes.

The ex-England international is quoted by the Daily Star claiming that Chelsea could be the team to fly the flag for the Premier League in Europe this term:

“I think Chelsea are our best hope as an English team. A lot of the other teams you can see deficiencies in the squad.”

Since Roman Abramovich bought Chelsea, we have oftentimes reached the latter stages of the competition. Let’s hope we can do so once again this year and provide Rio right.
