Chelsea striker Olivier Giroud has insisted that the Blues still need Gary Cahill. We’re not sure we agree with him on this one.

Cahill has already expressed his desire to leave the club in the January transfer window if he is unable to break into Maurizio Sarri’s starting eleven. The odds are stacked against him, so an emotional parting may well materialise in a few months time.

Despite Cahill only getting his first minutes of the season as a substitute against West Ham at the weekend, Giroud is adamant that he is still of use to Chelsea.

The World Cup winner is quoted by Standard Sport saying:

“I think his heart is still in Chelsea and hopefully we will keep him because we need him. He needs to be happy, that is the main thing, but I hope he stays because he is important for us.”

“He is a very good player. He’s been at Chelsea for six years, he is one of the faces of Chelsea and one of our captains. We need him.”

With Ethan Ampadu and Andreas Christensen coming through, it’s clear to see that Cahill’s time has come to seek the exit door. His value to the dressing room cannot be doubted, but from a purely footballing perspective, he is no longer of any use to Chelsea.
