Former Liverpool and Real Madrid midfielder Steve McManaman believes Chelsea have no chance of retaining the Premier League title, the Daily Star reports.
The Blues suffered their third defeat of the season in an embarrassing performance against Crystal Palace in the 2-1 loss.
League leaders Manchester City are now nine points clear of Antonio Conte’s side after thrashing Stoke City 7-2. But when speaking to the Daily Star, McManaman believes that the quality of Chelsea’s squad has noticeably dropped this season compared to last season.
McManaman is quoted by the Daily Star saying:
“I would say it’s over.”
“I’m absolutely amazed that, a couple of injuries in, and they look like a ghost side of what they were last year. They were strong and powerful last season. They’re not now.”
Even though it’s very hard to say whether our title hopes are over, just seven games into the season, the performances haven’t been good enough to compete with the best.
With the added pressure of being Chelsea’s manager, Conte has to have something up his sleeve, like the Italian did this time last season to get us back on track.
The Blues now host Roma in the Champions League on Wednesday, with a win putting us on the brink of qualifying for the knockout stages.
