Former Liverpool CEO Rick Parry has revealed that Steven Gerrard was adamant that he wanted to join Chelsea, report the Mirror.

Gerrard is widely considered one of the best players in Liverpool’s history, and it is unlikely that another like him will ever be produced at Anfield.

On the surface of it, you may assume that Gerrard was a Red through and through – but that doesn’t appear to be the case.

The Mirror quote ex-Liverpool CEO Parry, who reveals just how close Gerrard was from making a shock switch to Stamford Bridge:

“Way too close. It’s quite interesting when you reflect on that time.”

Parry goes on to note that at one stage he thought that Gerrard was headed for the Anfield exit door, as the Mirror report:

“Clearly, Steven came very close [to leaving] twice. In fact on the second occasion we thought we had lost him. The chairman and I went to see him at Melwood and there was no changing his mind. He was adamant but, fortunately, he did change his mind.”

Gerrard may never have been able to click with Frank Lampard for the England national team, but it would have been interesting to see what sort of partnership they could have formed at Chelsea.
