Manchester City have been forced to apologise after appearing to taunt Chelsea following the 6-0 demolition on Sunday afternoon.
As if pulling our pants down and exposing all the flaws in our team, and manager, wasn’t bad enough, City decided to play ‘One Step Beyond’ by Madness at the full-time whistle. For those you don’t know, this is OUR song. They took the p***, essentially.
In a way you can respect it. If we had played ‘Blue Moon’ after beating City at Stamford Bridge earlier in the season, Chelsea fans will have been loving it. However, it looks like someone must have been offended by it, as City were forced to apologise.
The Times reported after the game that a City official made it clear to the stadium DJ that they were to cut the song short in order to avoid claims that they were gloating. The city official later apologised to their Chelsea counterpart in hope of avoiding frosty relations.
There’s no fun in football nowadays, is there? Even as a Chelsea fan, we don’t see anything wrong with this. Competitive and local rivalries are less tasty than they have ever been. This sort of inoffensive behaviour is only going to make matters worse.
