David Ornstein of the Athletic is reporting that Tottenham have “made an offer” to sign Jan Paul van Hecke from Brighton.
The central defender is valued at around £70m after a couple of really impressive years in the Premier League. His previous work under new Tottenham coach Roberto de Zerbi is clearly part of the appeal here as Spurs look to rebuild.
Chelsea lurk in the shadows as Tottenham close in on top defender

There was never actually any confirmation of Chelsea interest from top sources like Ornstein, just speculation from lesser insiders. But given his quality and his profile, and given how well he would fit in with Xabi Alonso at Chelsea, we’d be very surprised if his name hadn’t been at least mentioned by Chelsea’s sporting structure.
Part of Chelsea’s trouble is the number of central defenders they already have on their books. They need to sell some of them before they can start getting serious over £70m+ deals for new ones.
In other news…
Another potential addition for the Blues this summer would be Dusan Vlahovic, who is a free agent at last after leaving Juventus. He would be expensive – but is experienced, with an eye for goal.
Chelsea managed to get two players onto the list of the most valuable under 21s in the Premier League.
