If Roman Abramovich chooses to sack Antonio Conte before the end of the season, he’d be doing his bank balance no favours at all.
The pressure surrounding Conte at Stamford Bridge has never been greater. In the last seven days, Chelsea were defeated 3-0 by AFC Bournemouth and 4-1 by Watford. It is the first time since 1995 that we have lost two consecutive Premier League games by a margin of three or more goals.
With the ruthless nature of Chelsea owner Abramovich, there have been suggestions that Conte could be dismissed mid-season following a string of poor results and sub-standard performances. However, there appears to be something holding Abramovich back from pulling the trigger.
According to Spanish outlet Sport, Chelsea will have to pay Conte £26.6M in compensation should we decide to sack him before the end of the season. As per the Telegraph‘s report at the time, that’s around about what we paid Barcelona to sign Cesc Fabregas in the summer of 2014.
It’s a hefty price to pay, and Roman does not appear to be prepared to pay it.
