Marcos Alonso aimed a sly dig at former manager Frank Lampard after Chelsea’s 2-0 win over Burnley on Sunday afternoon.
Under Lampard, the Spaniard’s services became surplus to requirements. Ben Chilwell and Emerson Palmieri were the preferred left-back options, while Alonso was frozen out. Atletico Madrid was even mentioned as a potential landing spot for the out of favor left-back.
But with the arrival of Thomas Tuchel, Alonso seems to be back in favor. The return of the wing-back positions has given his Chelsea career a lifeline. And after being selected by Tuchel at the weekend, he repaid that faith by scoring a brilliant goal against Burnley – grabbing and pointing to the Chelsea badge in celebration.
Speaking to chelseafc.com after the 2-0 win over Burnley, the 30-year old aimed a sly dig at former manager Frank Lampard claiming that Chelsea has the potential to achieve great things but only when they know what to do.
“I have more freedom to attack because we are better covered for defending but it’s not about the system.
When we play more organised, all together, knowing what to do and where to be on the pitch then this team has great potential to achieve big things.”
The relationship between Lampard and Alonso hasn’t been the same since the 3-3 draw with West Brom earlier in the season. And it appears that any chance of rekindling that relationship has gone. The club is unlikely to address Alonso’s latest comments, but it will be interesting to see if they are brought up again soon.
