Chelsea Should Look to Romelu Lukaku in The Summer if Costa Leaves

At the end of the season, whether Chelsea are champions or not, there will be rumours surrounding Diego Costa, as to where his future lies. The Brazil-born Spanish international is a wanted man, and one of hottest strikers in Europe right now.

At the tail end of last season and during the summer, rumours swirled, suggesting that Costa would be making a return to Atlético Madrid. During the January transfer window, those rumours switched to the Chinese Super League, with Tianjin Quanjian reportedly offering Costa £30 million-a-year for his services.

This, consequently, came at a time when Costa had been dropped from the squad in relation to a reported disagreement with manager Antonio Conte and fitness coach Julio Tous.

Perhaps the rumours gained more traction because of this, or perhaps Costa did indeed have his head turned by the proposal. Either way, there’s no shame in taking up an offer like that in a sport as cut-throat as football.

Regardless, Costa stayed and will continue to lead the Chelsea frontline for the rest of the season. Although, he may indeed leave in the summer. With that in mind, it’s probably smart for Chelsea to start thinking about possible successors. Costa’s 15 goals in the league have played a major part in Chelsea’s success this season, and replacing them could prove to be hard. However, it shouldn’t be so, as there’s a ready-made and Premier League-tested player at Everton that fits the bill perfectly. His name is Romelu Lukaku, and Chelsea should be lining him up for a Stamford Bridge return at all costs.

Lukaku’s record speaks for itself. The Belgian has 76 goals in 172 Premier League appearances, at the age of 23. That’s a goal every 169 minutes, which is already impressive, but can be improved upon at a team that has the capability to offer more chances to score.

Right in the middle of all of this, though, is Michy Batshuayi. A player that doesn’t seem that have been given a chance since joining the club, but one that clearly has a lot of talent.

Whilst it would be nice to simply promote the £33m summer-signing and save some money, the reality is that he has very little top level experience, and in an environment, as competitive as the Premier League, there is no time for bedding in.

Whilst the transfer window is still a while off, we will most likely hear more Chinese whispers about Costa, and do not be surprised if he takes an offer up. The money being presented by the clubs in the Chinese Super League dwarfs even that of what is offered in the Premier League, and as we are seeing, it’s hard stuff to turn down.
