Maurizio Sarri has shown unending faith in the senior players at Chelsea, and tonight they let him down again.
A front three of Pedro, Willian and Olivier Giroud contains two World Cup winners and a Brazil international with north of 50 caps. That should be enough to see off Slavia Prague.
Giroud is less guilty, given he’s not had as many chances as the others, but Pedro and Willian have had plenty of games to do the business, and both have shown disappointing form as the season passes through its viral moment.
The Brazilian was decent tonight, and made more threat down his side than the invisible Pedro on the other, but it still wasn’t much of a contribution.
They weren’t getting the ball in dangerous enough areas, and Giroud got none of the ball up front. The entire team’s shape didn’t function and it cried out for the attacking intent of Hazard and Hudson-Odoi out wide, as well as the speedy transitions of Ruben Loftus-Cheek.
Let’s hope all three of them are back in for this Sunday against Liverpool.
