Jorginho is a player who divided the opinions of Chelsea supporters last season, and in my view the criticism was unwarranted.
Maurizio Sarri came in with a system and style of football that needed orchestrating from a deep midfield position. This was Jorginho, playing a lot like the way Andrea Pirlo used to dictate play in that role in his latter years.
His role was to be the heartbeat of the team, where all the blood flows through. So in football terms that means all the moves from the back go through him, often resulting in sideways or backwards passing in order to keep the ball.
Often last year the players did not understand this style of football, not moving into the correct positions to receive the ball, or holding onto it too long.
This lead to poor performances and often Jorginho being the scapegoat because he was the metronome of this style.
But this season under Frank Lampard, we will see many more aspects of what is a quality technical midfielder, and Lampard agrees.
Jorginho is a central midfielder, he is not one dimensional and restricted to playing as a ‘regista’. He actually possesses the qualities of a top all round midfielder.
He has an eye for a long pass, is a leader, great passer, technically brilliant, and became a lot stronger in the tackle as he began to settle into the Premier League physically.
Lampard will use him in different midfield roles and will be more pragmatic, so we will see Jorginho further forward affecting the attacks, and also dictating from deep like he did last year.
But I think with fewer restrictions and more adaptations in the formations, we will see just how good this Italian international is and more deserved appreciation.
